Those damned SUVs

Australia's cars pumped 45 million tonnes of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere in 2003. This astounding figure, taken from the Federal Government's latest National Greenhouse Gas Inventory, seems enough to strike terror into the heart of anyone who has ever spared even a passing thought for climate change.

On top of this, trucks and light commercial vehicles released a further 24 million tonnes of greenhouse gases. As shocking as these figures appear, and as dependent on road transport as we are, cars are far from the biggest generators of greenhouse gases.

Livestock and electricity are bigger sources of environmental evil - and yet when was the last time you heard a politician take a swipe at a power station or a farmer?

Net greenhouse gas emissions in Australia in 2003 were 550 million tonnes. With no nuclear energy and little hydro power, electricity generation is overwhelmingly coal-fired in this country. According to the Australian Greenhouse Office (AGO), electrical power stations around the country released 190 million tonnes of greenhouse gases in 2003.

The AGO says cars were responsible for just eight per cent of national greenhouse emissions. Electricity, formerly mis-marketed as a clean energy source, produced 35 per cent of our greenhouse emissions - more than four times the climate-changing potential of cars.

Andrew Bolt has a lot to say (in his new book, 'Still not sorry') about the greens and their overlooking of facts when it comes to environmental issues. I tend to agree with the PM, writes a lot of sense that fellow.

So all you militant greens out there, get to know some of the facts before you vandalise peoples SUVs and demonise the rest of us for not using bicycles in this modern age.

Also all you elistist hollywood types driving around in shopping trolley smart cars and hair dryer powered electric gadgets, you are wasting your time, best move out of those million dollar homes and into a cave somewhere with the 'noble savage' if you really give a toss about the environment, till then leave us alone with our thundering bent 8 planet warmers.
